Known for his zealous advocacy, Stephen Sweatt is a trial lawyer at Zerillo Law Firm. Oftentimes, facing criminal charges or fighting for parental rights can be very challenging for the client. These are life changing cases, which impact not only the client, but also for their family. Stephen’s passion and skill to zealously represent clients in these cases help them navigate these troubled waters.
Stephen would describe his relationship with his clients as a “partnership” and “client driven.” At all times Stephen is focused on the client’s goals. Client engagement is essential. Stephen takes the time to truly involve the client, and incorporate their goals, concerns, values, and feedback. Stephen manages the attorney-client relationship with transparency, so clients can see how their interests are being served during the litigation process.
Stephen’s practice focuses on criminal defense and family law. He is licensed to practice in Maine State and Federal Courts. Stephen is a member of the Maine Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and serves on their Continuing Legal Education committee.
Prior to joining the firm, while in law school, Stephen served as a student attorney at the York County District Attorney’s Office and at the Cumberland Legal Aid Clinic. Both the District Attorney’s Office and the Clinic provided Stephen with skills and knowledge to navigate the very complex criminal and family law world. He has worked for ZLF since 2019.
Stephen grew up in Scarborough, Maine, where he attended Scarborough High School. He graduated from the University of Southern Maine with a degree in Biology, followed by earning his Juris Doctor of Laws at the University of Maine School of Law.
Stephen received the Laurie A. Gibson Award for Excellence awarded to the applicant who obtained the highest score on the essay portion of the Maine Bar Examination.
In his free time Stephen and his wife enjoy spending their time hiking, camping, running, cooking, playing soccer, and playing with their dogs, Rooney and Stella.
